1. Rationale:
A first step towards providing adequate sanitation services in urban areas is to monitor the sanitation service chain, to identify its strengths and weaknesses, from containment, including emptying, transport, treatment and safe disposal or resource recovery. SFDs can help achieve this by offering a new and innovative way to engage sanitation experts, political leaders and civil society in coordinated discussions about excreta management in their city. In addition,
- An SFD presents a clear picture of how wastewater and faecal sludge management (FSM) services are delivered in a city, and the resulting challenges.
- The SFD is a diagnostic tool that helps to identify the aspects of service delivery where improvements are needed.
- An SFD primarily provides technical and non-technical stakeholders with an advocacy tool to support decision-making on urban sanitation planning and programming.
- Importantly, an SFD does not provide a “shortcut” around integrated sanitation planning, promotion, investment, design, construction, operation, and maintenance. These remain very necessary components for implementing successful urban sanitation.
2. Objective
The main objective of this proposed event is to enhance the knowledge and understanding level of the participants about the understanding of the SFD tools their use, generation/production of SFD, and report preparation and understanding the SFD review process before finalizing the SFD report and uploading in SUSANA platform for publishing. generation of SFD graphic and report preparation that would be used as an evidence-based advocacy tool which ultimately help in the preparation of the Citywide Inclusive Sanitation Plan for cities in the coming days.
The specific objectives of this orientation training programme are to make the participants able to understand:
- the SFD, its importance and its applications in the context of urban sanitation
- the sanitation service chain analysis and data collection process
- the SFD production/generation and its review process
- the use of SFD tools i.e. SFD Graphic Generator
- the SFD report preparation and uploading into SUSANA platform.
3. Targeted Participants
The event is proposed for staff members of FANSA national chapters who have basic information on urban sanitation and its components. Since SFD will be generated with the help of SuSANA platform, participants should be familiar with it.
4. Content and Session plan
The training content is divided into 3 sections with two specific sessions in each: introducing SFD and use, data collection and generation of diagrams and preparing the SFD report. The details are presented below.
-
- Introduction of SFD: This section discusses the definition, importance, use and introduction of different terminologies related to the shit flow diagram. Besides the importance of SFD, its application in the context of urban sanitation together with the understanding of the sanitation service chain analysis. Participants will get the basic idea of SFD and use it in this session.
- Preparation of data and generating graphics: In this section, the presenter will provide a concept of the sanitation service chain analysis in the urban context to the participants and will detail out on the need of data and its collection process to have more information/data required for SFD preparation, its cleaning, reclassification, and data entry into the matrix for diagram generation. For this, the participants will have clear understanding on the use of SFD tools i.e. SFD graphic generator for preparing/generating SFD.
- Practical exercise - generating SFD graphics: The participants will have the opportunity to carry out hands on exercise on how to generate SFD with the ready made (mock) data to kneel down on practicing the process of SFD generation and its review along with the analysis of the sanitation service chain. This exercise will help the participants to build up their confidence in applying this skill and knowledge when they have to apply in their respective R4R project works in generating SFD using SFD graphic generation and other data collection and processing tools, formats/templates and checklists etc. along with the review process.
- Preparation of SFD report and submission: In this section, participants will be introduced to the reporting template as well as the checklist and preparation and submission of SFD report and data validation. At the same time, the participants will also have an understanding on the SFD review process along with the clarity on the process of uploading the SFD report. finalized after its review and validation, into the SUSANA platform.
