Laboratory Training on Determination of Pathogenic Parameters for Fecal Sludge & Wastewater July 10 @ 9:00 am - July 13 @ 5:00 pm UTC+6

In Bangladesh, various initiatives have been implemented to enhance the management of fecal sludge through the establishment of treatment facilities. Assessing the characteristics of fecal sludge is crucial for designing appropriate technologies and ensuring compliance with environmental standards. However, the analysis of fecal sludge is a relatively new area for water and wastewater laboratories in the country. To address this gap, the ITN-BUET, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation project, has set up a state-of-the-art reference laboratory at the Department of Civil Engineering, BUET. This specialized laboratory conducts surveillance, monitoring, and validation of new technologies for fecal sludge treatment plants (FSTPs). It also offers capacity-building services to other laboratories through comprehensive training events. In collaboration with the Department of Civil Engineering, BUET, ITN-BUET will organize a practical hands-on laboratory training program focused on analyzing microbial and heavy metal content in fecal sludge and wastewater. This training will equip participants with the latest knowledge and practical skills, enabling them to enhance their laboratory practices and contribute effectively to fecal sludge management in Bangladesh.

Training Outlines

The following topics will be covered:

  • Overview of microbiological parameters and laboratory analysis.
  • Practical work in the reference lab, including sample preparation, heavy metal analysis light microscope examinations, cell counting, staining, plating, sterilization, and disinfection.
  • Quality control in laboratory, including sampling, detection of contaminants, evaluation of results, microbial sampling in fecal sludge, and hygienic design and cleaning procedures.
  • Studying key microorganisms (total coliform, fecal coliform, Salmonella, and Helminth eggs) and explaining different types of nutrient media, including their preparation, incubation, and evaluation.

Participants’ Profile
This training is intended for researchers, scientists, instructors, managers, and technicians in universities, research institutes, government agencies, and private water and wastewater testing laboratories.

Training Modality
This training program offers a unique opportunity for participants to learn and practice the latest techniques for analyzing fecal sludge and wastewater with a mix of theoretical lectures and hands-on laboratory work. The course will be led by renowned experts and experienced laboratory scientists from BUET, who will provide expert guidance and support using state-of-the-art laboratory equipment.
